death by email

I love the way Hugh MacLeod gets right to the point!
Technology is great, don’t get me wrong, BUT we are failing in a epic way to manage the use of it in a manner that is healthy!
And the classic example of our failure to manage and live with technology is email!
We have lost control of out [...]

Do we need more social connections in the classroom.

I am wrestling with the use of technology in my university classes.
To be very honest the use of new communication technology excites me!
I love the way Twitter, #jamesed_me, allows me to communicate links, materials and ideas to my students.
Facebook creates another forum for interaction, especially if the group is protected.
Livestream allows me to actually film [...]

apps are the future.

The 4th screen (your mobile/cellular phone) holds the key to your information world.
And are we teaching app creation, management, imagination in our schools?
I suspect many teachers/professors have only a passing knowledge about apps given that they are not using phones that easily take on board advanced applications.
My advice to students, anyone really, don’t wait for [...]

It is a PREZI world now

How many of you have gone from an overhead projector to PowerPoint, maybe Keynote, and are now feeling pretty comfortable?
Most of us have been using some variation of the slide projector/asetate presentation format all our lives.
But you know what? We now liveĀ  in a whiteboard era. Can you imagine using a chalkboard?
Yet we still use [...]

Better use of time!

The problem with social media is that is can and will be all consuming if you allow it to be.
The problem with the Internet in general is there is simply so much out there how do you know where to start looking for information, ideas and just stuff?
The usual approach is to go to your [...]

AudioBoo.

I want to share with you one of my absolute favorite WEB2.0 tools, yes I see WEB2.0 applications as tools, Audioboo!
Audioboo is an application that I use on my iPhone to post audio podcasts.
You may be saying why? Who cares? What is the point? All good questions!
Well, there is no denying that audio presentations are [...]

NUDGE and the A+++ Example, TED.

Every so often you happen upon a book that has the potential to change the way you do something, maybe everything.
If you are like me you can list those books on the back of your hand.
NUDGE, by Dr. Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, is one of those provocative great books.

Who hasn’t asked themselves, “how can [...]

Back from a Blog Break.

Do you ever just tune out?
Stop blogging, stop email (well I did answer 5 messages from my students), hold the tweets, facebook freeze?
What do you have to lose is the big question.
Maybe continuity.
Maybe followers.
Maybe nothing.
What I find whether I take a 7 day or 7 week break is that I fell far more alert to [...]

TED2009 Simple Grand Ideas!

Have you seen “Where the Hell is Matt”?
Dance, communicate, connect and in the process tell a story about humanity.
Makes me wonder, wonder why we seem to think things need to be complicated to be effective.
What Matt reminds us, and TED is it how you tell the story that matters.
How well do you connect?

Books Redeployed.

Sometimes we stumble on ideas in the places we least expect to find them.
The OECD is full of bright ideas that often seem to be left hanging.
The OECD in its work on sustainable development talks about the idea of books on demand.
I do not want to suggest that the bookstore is going to die or [...]
