Livestream has got to be one of my favorite places on the Internet.

You name it, from National Geographic to a local radio station, it is being broadcast to the world through Livestream.

And what I really love about Livestream content is the simple fact that this alternative content is easy to find and watch.

How much SXSW do you get to watch?

And Facebook Live? Did you even know about Facebook live?

And when was the last time you listened to Mike Tyson talk about his ability with a computer?

Again here we have a resource that is being under used by so many groups and organizations who need to get their message out.

And once you start watching Livestream content it is hard to turn back to traditional TV.

Why? That one word, convenience.

And then there is this little piece on fashion that made me sit back and listen as Oscar de la Renta talk about among other things truth and business.

There is a lot of noise out there on the Internet and once again a way to break through the clutter is with a service like Livestream.

In September I will be taking on the challenge of being the 1st chair of the Department of Mass Communication at the Canadian University of Dubai.

The 1st question people ask is why am I leaving Zayed University after 12 years?

Zayed University has been a great place to work and a fantastic personal innovation incubator for me.

But how often are you given the opportunity to not only dream about how you might teach journalism, public relations and advertising for the world we live in but actually do it? In this world almost never.

Well, I have been asked to join the faculty of CUD and not only dream but do.

Very soon I am going to find myself with my feet in 3 places.

I will be a teacher.

I will be an administrator.

I will be an innovation lab leader.

In all 3 scenarios there is going to be a need for extreme motivation.

New programs have very particular emotional ups and downs for everyone making motivation job #1 for me.

As would happen Inc.com has an excellent set of tips on just that, motivation!

Every one of the 14 Inc suggestions are great.

Here are my top 5 picks.

Avoid negative people. They drain your energy and waste your time, so hanging with them is like shooting yourself in the foot.

Stretch past your limits on a daily basis. Walking the old, familiar paths is how you grow old. Stretching makes you grow and evolve.

Avoid weak goals. Goals are the soul of achievement, so never begin them with “I’ll try …” Always start with “I will” or “I must.”

Treat inaction as the only real failure. If you don’t take action, you fail by default and can’t even learn from the experience.

Take responsibility for your own results. If you blame (or credit) luck, fate or divine intervention, you’ll always have an excuse.

Imagine if this top 5 list was the 1st document you saw as you walked into an office?

Imagine if this top 5 list was on the front of a student manual?

Imagine if this top 5 list was what you would hold yourself accountable to?

As the 1st chair of the mass communication program at CUD that is what I will do!

One of our greatest failures today is the simple fact that we beat the love of dreaming out of people.

If people didn’t dream where would technology be today?

Yet when it comes to taking creative, even practical leaps, we are quick to knock people down.

What a shame!

This Microsoft Envisoning Lab is working 10 years in the future now.

The future of productivity video is nothing short of a “dream diving board”.

Look at the work surfaces, the work flow, the work space.

From a communication perspective listen to the narration, oh there is none!

When I watch this video all I keep thinking is where will my teaching be in 10 years and how do I get there now?

There are a lot of stereotypes out there and we, you and I, do a wonderful job of sustaining them.

If I was to put the words fitness and models together what would you think?

What if I was to add the words bikini and stage to the mix?

Exactly!

When I knew I was going to be speaking to Nadine du Toit, Derryn, Belinda and Ilana about being fitness models I had a whole set of ideas flash through my head.

Of course seeing the stage photos of these women competing also helped to create a stereotype in my head of these ladies.

How wrong I was.

What did I think? All the wrong things but exactly what society would have me think about a women walking on a stage in a tiny bikini wearing high heels.

Instead what I met were 4 competitive, confident, funny, driven, intelligent, professional women who are very serious about health and fitness and who are also very proud of what they have achieved.

These women have embraced a healthy life style choice and transformed themselves, physically and mentally, into dynamic and very distinctly fit individuals.

And these women have taken back their femininity.

Sure that sounds odd but they really have!

These 4 women are very proud of their bodies and are not shy to show you what they have achieved.

Of course on the radio they were fully dressed and in some of the most conservative attire I have seen.

But they did bring the bikini’s and high heals to show me.

These women, like the others I have spoken to recently, were very inspirational and not at all what I expected.

Well worth a listen here is our conversation.

I make no bones about it I think that the TED idea is the best thing I ever stumbled upon as an educator.

I use TED.com materials in all my classes, have collaborated on various sized TEDx events.

I have even settled on producing TEDx Salon events at my University.

And now there is a fantastic addition to the TEDTalk videos, 10 new themed TED podcasts.

TED introduces 10 new podcasts on iTunes

If we could recommend one superb TEDTalk about music a week, what would it be? What about business? Technology?

Here at TED.com we are always looking for new and better ways to bring together the voices of TED speakers and TED viewers. This week we are launching themed iTunes podcasts, to bring more topics of interest directly to you. Along with receiving your daily TEDTalk, subscribing to one of our specially curated podcast channels means you will receive a weekly talk recommended by the TED team in the category (or categories!) of your choice: Art, Business, Education, Health, Kids + Family, Music, News + Politics, Science + Medicine, Society + Culture and Technology. When you subscribe this week, you’ll start with 10 TEDTalks we think you’ll like.

Any other themes you’d like to see? Want more than one talk a week? Feeling love in our general direction? Leave us a comment below or write to contact@ted.com.

To start receiving talks from your favorite TED topics, subscribe now >>

I am constantly amazed by the value I get from TEDTalks.

I am even more amazed at how infectious they are as we are seeing at our TEDxZU Salon.

I came across this in the Times, sorry I lost the rest of the paper to grab the date but it was the week September 17 to 24.

How well do you say thank you?

To be honest I don’t think we say thank you often enough in a sincere authentic way often enough to have any experience of doing it well.

I am not talking the thank you you give to the cab driver or the person slinging you a burger but the thank you we all really need to be giving more often.

Sure the Emmy awards are extraordinary but even there the thank you/ acceptance speeches are often so contrived they make the average person shudder.

Well Kate Winslet has done something extraordinary, be herself.

There is a lesson here for all speeches we give, be yourself!

I have a group of students making TED-like presentations on the Disney quotation, “if you can dream it you can do it.”

Every student looked at me, blank.

One student said she didn’t have a dream!

And today I stumbled, again, upon the idea of using Icebergs as a viable water source.

This is not a new idea but it sure is a great dream and that dream is becoming closer to reality.

Disney was right, again!

What I love about crazy, far flung, ideas is that there is always an abundance of passion in and around them.

Crazy ideas create new parameters for solutions because crazy ideas never work within the current realm of thought.

And crazy ideas generate opposition which builds more passion and even more far flung solutions because there is an element of, “I will show you”, generated around the whole idea.

Check out the video at the end of this post.

First it is simply great photography.

Second it is testament to sticking with an idea and working it through.

Too often we reach a roadblock and get frustrated because people do not see what we see.

Time, time, time, if you work on something long enough others will see what you see and the solution will be found.

1. you need passion

2. you need to break the problem into small parts that others, and yourself, can realize

3. ignore time

4. tell a great story

5. rework your plan as new ideas and variables become present

6. go with your gut

7. it does not matter what others think in the short-term because you are in it fore the long haul

All of that comes from this video.
