Anatomy of a good teaching moment

Posted on | March 21, 2011 | 1 Comment

Teaching is just like show business, you are only as good as your last performance.

But teaching is also about experience and that experience is built each time you step into the room.

So what makes a good teaching moment.

1. speak with not at the students

2. time is important, you do get boring

3. the content is for the student not you

3a. make the content meaningful

4. be clear why you are delivering the content

5. be honest

6. it is about the student experience so check your day at the door

7. make time to engage with every student who has something to share

8. think like a video game

9. be gracious

10. be gracious

Everyday as I walk to my classes I go over this list and for the most part I get it right.

Those classes that were as bad for me as the student are the days I stray off the list.
