The app revolution.

Who doesn’t use the word app at least once a week?
We all do!
The fact that the app is becoming a new part of our life is an exciting new frontier for education.
On one hand the app might be the way to take what we do in the classroom to a whole new audience.
On another hand the app allows the student to really see that the idea that they have no idea what the applications for what we teach might be when they graduate!
I think apps are exciting and the sooner we start teaching students how to create and apply apps the better!
I found this one on the CBC website!
The YWCA has launched a free iPhone app aimed at helping young women who find themselves in difficult or dangerous situations.
The group’s Safety Siren application will send an urgent SOS email to a friend or family member that shows the user’s location on a map.
It will also automatically dial the number the user has chosen as her emergency contact.
The safety call and email can be activated with a button or shake of the phone. The user can opt for the shake option, designed by YWCA software developers, when she picks her settings.
“It’s the first of its kind,” a YWCA spokeswoman said.
The app also offers:
- A Q&A about women’s sexual health, focused on dating.
- Tips on safety and well-being.
- Links to YWCAs and emergency and crisis resource centres across Canada.
The point is there are 1001 ways to apply what is being done in any class to the world around us.
There are some who will say that the point of education is to learn, yes I agree.
But I also think that learning, applying and creating are also big pieces of the education puzzle and without them the learning process is incomplete.
I think the app idea is important and an avenue for education advancement that is being under exploited.
