When can you say you are good?

I had an interesting TWITTER exchange with the morning host of Dubai 92, Cat Boy yesterday.

The exchange was about when is it proper to say you are absolutely amazing at what you do and when is that nothing more than you patting yourself on the back?

I think we spend too much time hoping people will notice we are great at something or we rely on an award scheme, that is usually flawed at best, to tell us and everyone that we are doing a good job.

I think there are two parts to the issue.

First you do need to be doing amazing things if you are going to tell people your work is amazing.

Second if you are going to say you are the best you need to have the proof out there on a sustained basis!

Awards have their place but the court of public opinion that can constantly evaluate the sustained and transparent proof of your genius is what matters in the end, really.

Are you going to hire a person because they got the highest performance evaluation or the best employee award? Maybe.

But more likely you are going to hire a person based on what others say about them!

And how do people know you are amazing?

By what YOU say and what YOU do.

What makes this work? Awards?

No Math is telling the world I did something very cool very grand the you can watch it!

If you are good, maybe even amazing, don’t be afraid to say so!

But be able to meet the sustained proof test.

Matt is amazing at what he does and he can see that he is!

Are you amazing?

Tell people and let them see it!

Be proud to be amazing not ashamed!
